Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy caramelized sugars and a smooth cup.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

ABOUT THE ROASTER

ReAnimator

Philadelphia, PA
Partnered with Trade since 2018
Philadelphia's ReAnimator has been exploring coffee's complexity since 2011. Owned by Mark Capriotti and Mark Corpus, this roaster embraces seasonality like few others—single-origin offerings cycle through frequently, staying on the menu for only weeks before making way for something new.
Fun Fact
ReAnimator began in a row house basement in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood with a small two kilogram roaster.

    Sweetness

Method notes: mostly I brew with the Oxo Rapid Brewer, but I always make a couple pour-overs and a cold brew from every new bag. Reanimator has a brew guide on their site, but I swear with the Oxo I preferred this at a lower temperature, 184-190°F.

Tasting: this coffee, the Reanimator Ethiopia Mamo Kacha, is first unequivocal 5-star rating for a coffee from Trade. In 25+ years of daily coffee drinking, I don't think I've ever had a coffee with this much consistent natural sweetness. My tasting notes included jasmine, sweet tea, wheat, graham cracker, and stonefruit. 5/5.

Such good flavor of Ethiopian roast

LOVED this Ethiopian blend!! Stood out as I enjoy bolder flavor coffee to truly taste it all in the slow drip machine I use with the OXO I have

    Excellent Ethiopian!

REALLY enjoyed this selection. There have been a lot of Ethiopian coffees in my subscription but this one had the best blend of base 'coffee' flavor and some fruity fun. It's a little more developed roast, I think, and it just balances really nicely. I might just have to order another bag...

    Tea like and fruity

Love this coffee, I did have to adjust my grind a little finer, as most light roasts call for, but this has been one of my favorites from Trade!
