Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

    One of the best

I favor the African coffees for my daily pour overs of 15g in and 250g out. Having tried several of the Trade offerings this one came as a recommendation as it was a favorite of the Trade staff. It has a smooth mouth feel and wonderful sweetness. I found it drinks best at about 155 degrees and has simply become a cup of coffee that once you take your first sip the cup does not leave your hand until the cup is empty. Absolutely a coffee that I will purchase again.
