Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

Hudson Organic Dark Roast (from Irving Farm, Millerton, NY)

I've been drinking this coffee daily for about a year. I make 4 cups in my automatic drip maker, set on BOLD setting (1-4 cups). The result is a very bright, lively taste with a lot of subtle notes that my wife and I really love. We used to experiment with different coffees every month from Trade, but once we tried this one, we were hooked.
