Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

ABOUT THE ROASTER

Sightseer

Austin, TX
Friends and roasters Kimberly and Sara noticed women were everywhere in coffee except at the top. They founded Sightseer in 2021 to change that, sourcing 100% from women producers. With every bag, they work toward a more equitable supply chain and a brighter future for the whole industry.
Fun Fact
There’s not really a rhyme or reason to the names of Sightseer’s coffees. It’s just that, it’ll make sense when you drink it.

    This could be my daily...

Testing notes were spot on. My morning espresso pulled so nice and fresh even on day five with my profitec pro 600.

It's only going to get better as from my experience the second week after freshly roasted beans rest is the peak. A really good bean holds in there through week three also with a subtle slow decline starting during week 4. I'll never know with my 310g bag but I'll definitely pause my trade subscription and buy 5lbs to enjoy it for a month.

Very dessert like and pairs deliciously with half and half for a decadent cortado breve, my daily morning routine and start to the day. The last sip left a satisfying and lingering desire for more. Instead of making another one and over caffeinating, I decided to leave a review instead.

Grinds nice at 25 on my philos i189s. There wasn't anything I didn't like about this blend. If it's consistent this definitely could be my daily. Brewed at 93 degrees Celsius, 25g in and 42g in out, with 42g streamed half & half.

Respect to the women who produced this hellacious espresso! Don't take my word for it, try it, the quality speaks for itself.

    Outstanding espresso

This roast has a fantastic depth of flavor without any harsh bitterness. It pulls beautiful, consistent shots with excellent crema. Highly recommended!

    Delicious Espresso

I just got this coffee this morning, and already my second shot was delicious. The first shot was fine, but lacking in flavor—I went a bit coarser, from 18.5g in/45g out in 35 seconds to 18.5g in/40g out in 30 seconds, and the flavor is amazing. I would describe the flavor as having notes of raisinettes and biscoff cookie, which I feel is accurately reflected in their notes of cocoa, brown sugar, and dried fruit. The shot by itself was very good, the latte I made from it has me thinking “man that’s good” every time I take a sip. This was my replacement bag from Trade’s First Bag Guarantee, and I was not disappointed. Would definitely order again.

I also really appreciate they put the roast date on the bag (shown in the attached photo). It’s a red flag to me when I buy a bag from a specialty roaster, and they can’t even use a date gun to quickly slap a label on there. I got my coffee 8 days after roasting, which is a bit later than I would have liked, but does give the beans adequate time to rest so they’re ready to go right after delivery.

    Delicious and chocolate

I am always looking for a coffee with a warm chocolate and brown sugar taste and this is perfect. I am no barista but every cup comes out delicious and smooth.
