Understanding roast levels

Roast level affects both flavor and body. Here's what to expect from each.

Light

Best for: those that prize delicate flavors and a tea-like feel above intensity.

Light-Medium

Best for: those that enjoy juicy acidity and gently caramelized sugars.

Medium

Best for: those that enjoy balance and classic flavors like cocoa and nuts.

Medium-Dark

Best for: those looking for classic coffee flavors with a kiss of roast.

Dark

Best for: those that love intense, smoky flavor and a full body above all else.

Trade Tip

Roasters don’t always agree on roast level — one roaster’s dark might look the same as another’s medium. We taste and assign every coffee our own roast level, so your matches stay consistent no matter who roasted them.

    A very pleasant coffee

Brewed four minutes in a pre-heated metal wall French press this makes a very pleasant, medium bodied brew. Not the most complex coffee I've tasted and probably wouldn't buy it again but it's still quite nice.

Not exactly what I was going for and the grind size wasn't what I wanted.

So, first off, I have bought other coffees from Trade before. I have an aeropress, so I just order the grind size for the aeropress (as I don't have a grinder at home). Unfortunately, compared to the other coffee grounds I'd gotten, this one seemed much coarser and every time I use them, my filter seems to rip. Aeropress grounds tend to be on the finer side, for those of you who don't own one. Anyway, I'm not sure if it's because of that coarser grind or just the roast level, but it was much more acidic than I was expecting. I'm sure anyone who likes lighter roasts will be delighted by it, of course. I tend to prefer medium to medium dark roasts and was trying this out. I'm a bit disappointed, mainly due to the grind size, but maybe I'm incorrect about it. In any case, dont let this dissuade you. But, if you are particular about grind size, I recommend buying the whole beans and grinding it yourself if you like the size of the other brands! (If thats possible for you!)
